As Christians, we are to build each other up, not tear each other down. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 says, Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. It's easier to tear down than to build up. It takes a great deal of time to build a skyscraper but with just a few well placed charges, it can be demolished in seconds. We as people are the same. Even the strongest can crumble under a few well placed attacks of bitter criticism. We should not diminish others to a pile of rubble that has collapsed under guilt and shame but instead encourage and help others so that through the holy spirit they can reflect beauty and glory to others. Romans 14 says, Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. Each of us will give a personal account to God. We must decide to live in a way that will not cause someone else to stumble and fall. Here are 3 steps we can take to build others up.
1. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths.
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. Ephesians 4:29
Some examples are words of gossip, angry words that tear down, slanderous words, and destructive criticism.
2. Speak words that build up and impart grace.
Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. 1 Corinthians 8:1
Love builds up! We can speak words of concern, words that lift up, encourage, strengthen, words of blessing and praise and words that give hope. We can also offer words of correction when someone is taking the wrong path. If done the right way, this is speaking the truth in love.
3. As there is need.
Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
We should see where others are at and what there needs are. We should not just be aware of our concerns but minister God's grace to their needs with words that build up. We are called to help one another in our walk with Christ.
Let us stop being self serving, self centered, and self obsessed. Let us focus on building others up so that we can glorify God and help others do the same.
